Cruise Control for Bike: What is it and How Does it Work?

But the nuance with adaptive cruise control is that it doesn’t just set your speed and forget it; it also regulates your speed if a vehicle in front of you is going slower than you’d like. The core additional components of an adaptive cruise control system are the radar/sensor units that are placed in the nose and tail, and the adaptive cruise control computer. Firstly, as with an IMU / cornering ABS, an adaptive cruise control system is better described as part of the motorcycle’s overall safety and control system.

Electronic Cruise Control

The Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX is a bike with a high-performance engine and an agile frame. It has a 1,043 cc inline four-cylinder engine, with smooth throttle response and crisp acceleration off the line. Additionally, the bike is designed to reduce vibration for an even smoother ride.

Taking advantage of throttle assist allows you to stretch and relax your hand. This helps to prevent it from cramping up, becoming fatigued, or becoming painful. The Go Cruise Ease Throttle Lock takes advantage of an even simpler design than our top recommendation. This one slides over the handlebar and is meant to be pushed into place to lock the throttle. The ST1300 motorcycle shares many of the classic lines of the X-Wing but doesn’t use its chassis.

One option for those with a very limited range of motorcycles is to install a Tuneboy flash. Tuneboy is an Australian company run by an interesting computer programmer named Wayne who reverse-engineered a bunch of ECUs to be able to flash them with his own computer. But you should bear in mind that it’s a very new company with only a few models supported so far.

One impressive feature that makes this bike stand out from the competition is its daytime running light that automatically switches. Thanks to cruise control and plenty of power, the Ducati XDiavel motorcycle will make your rides easier than ever. This bike features a standard cruise control system for easier and smoother riding.

Continue scanning ahead and actively riding – override cruise whenever needed. We’ll cover everything from the basics of this useful feature to recalls related to cruise control problems. I can categorically state that the system works flawlessly and it has really enhanced the riding experience on long rides; especially in freeway riding. These work, after a fashion, but they’re not as effective as a real cruise control. So far, Indian hasn’t released any motorcycles with radar-assisted adaptive cruise. The ACC system on the three BMW motorcycles works with a front-mounted radar only.

The riders are known to install aftermarket systems on their motorcycles. The FJR1300’s cruise control uses electronic throttle control to regulate engine power and keep the bike at the desired speed. What’s kind of surprising is that some brands haven’t released any motorcycles with adaptive cruise control — even when some are releasing multiple, and when Yamaha has it on a middleweight. I’m hoping to see active cruise on the more accessible sport bikes as well, like the Ninja 1000 (though that did only just get cruise control from 2020). Like any rider safety system, adaptive/active cruise control isn’t something you should rely on to save your life.

What Adaptive/Active Cruise Control Doesn’t Do

Additionally, it is crucial to familiarize yourself with the system’s operation and adjust your riding style accordingly. For folks often touring or covering long distances, an advanced system that reduces hand fatigue and enhances comfort will be worth the investment. Conversely, city riders might not find much value in a complex setup. Harley-Davidson is expected to release models with adaptive cruise control in the near future, enhancing the ride experience for its loyal customer base. Their cruisers such as the Harley Davidson Sportster are already known for their comfort and style, and adding cruise control will enhance these features even further. Yamaha is continuously improving its motorcycles with new technology, and has recently introduced the Yamaha MT-09 Tracer 9 GT+ with adaptive cruise control.

The switchgear unit is expensive (~$1200 for a BMW F 900 R I enquired about) and the dealer has to know how to enable it, but it’s possible at some dealers. If you have electronic cruise control on your motorcycle, then you know what it is. Its purpose is to maintain a steady speed without requiring constant throttle adjustments from the rider. Compared to other types of cruise control systems, throttle lock cruise control is generally more affordable. There are several different types of cruise control systems available for bikes, each with their own unique features and benefits. Cruise control for bikes can be especially useful for long-distance rides or highway commuting, where maintaining a steady speed can be both more comfortable and more fuel-efficient.

If a vehicle is going more slowly, it keeps at a safe distance; and if that vehicle speeds up or gets out of the way, the bike resumes its speed. For now, it’s not like you’d save money by getting a Ducati part and stuffing it into your BMW or KTM motorcycle. But maybe years in the future, when rebuilding a crashed classic, you might be able to get a salvaged Bosch radar sensor from one bike to work in another. The speed limiter is a feature where the user can set a maximum speed for the Hayabusa, e.g. 100 km/h.

But being an upright touring bike, that’s a less surprising bike on which to have cruise. Particularly as most cruiser motorcycles aren’t particularly advanced. Although you can fit cruise to the Triumph Bonneville Bobber as well, so it’s good that this direct competitor provides the same option. But with a 150+ hp engine that likes to rev and genuine corner clearance, the XDiavel was never really a direct competitor to Harley-Davidson or various Japanese metric cruisers. It’s definitely in “muscle cruiser” territory — a comfortable sportbike, or a scary fast cruiser.

Honda just released their NT1100 sport tourer, which has cruise control, but it’s not active. I would like to see active cruise on the Africa Twin at least, but I don’t expect to for a few years. KTM doesn’t have a sport tourer (that’s the SAS’s duty), but I do wonder when active cruise may make it to the 890 adventure range. The Kawasaki H2 SX is the more accessible sport tourer, made for everyday riding, despite the very high power number.

To disengage the throttle lock, there is an easily accessible off button. Everything can be easily accessed and used with your thumb, so no need to take your hands off the handle bars while you’re riding. The GO CRUISE 2 Universal Throttle Control System is a simple and basic throttle lock.

A recent innovation in the cruise control landscape is the development of adaptive cruise control (ACC), which takes the technology a step further by incorporating radar-based assistance systems. ACC systems allow the motorcycle to not only maintain a set speed but also adjust that speed according to surrounding traffic conditions. The basic cruise components kit will give you all the parts that every cruise control model uses.

This is done by slowly rotating the throttle until you achieve your desired speed on the bike. This same dial is used to open the lock so that it can be attached to the handlebars. When it’s not needed, it’s just as easy to open the dial slightly and push the throttle lock out of place. It comes with a 300 mm front and 250 mm rear disc size, which provides excellent braking power. It has an intelligent ABS that works silently and a manually adjustable suspension. This feature is not very common in this range of motorcycles, which makes it an appealing choice.

When used properly, cruise control can reduce fatigue and allow riders to fully take in the scenery. Owners of affected models are advised not to operate their motorcycles until the brake light switch has been replaced and the issue corrected. Yamaha has issued a recall for over 18,000 motorcycles across 7 models, including the FJR1300, due to a faulty brake light switch. It clamps to the plastic throttle tube, between the grip flange and the throttle housing. When the ATLAS is engaged, a friction pad on a stainless steel tab presses against the throttle housing wall and, using pressure and friction, stops the return spring from snapping back.
